Microgrids
Commissioning a microgrid applies the same disciplined process we use for building systems — Owner's Project Requirements, design review, pre-functional checks, functional performance testing and documentation — to distributed energy resources and the controls that coordinate them. With a licensed Professional Engineer – Control Systems and experience integrating mechanical, electrical, plumbing and renewable energy systems at the controls level, our team focuses on the interfaces between equipment, the microgrid controller and the utility.
What we commission
- Solar PV arrays and inverters
- Battery energy storage systems (BESS), including lithium-ion and long-duration technologies such as flow and zinc batteries
- Standby and prime generators
- Switchgear, protective relays, transfer and paralleling equipment
- Microgrid controllers and energy management systems
- Utility interconnection and point of common coupling equipment
- Metering, SCADA and building automation system integration
Commissioning scope
Testing the transitions
A microgrid proves its value at the moments of transition. We develop and witness tests that verify the system detects a utility outage and islands, carries critical loads on its own resources, restores power from a dead bus where black start is part of the design, and resynchronizes and reconnects to the utility in accordance with the design and interconnection requirements — along with the protection settings, sequences and alarms that support each operating mode.
Planning or building a microgrid?
Bring us in during design to review sequences and test requirements, or during construction to verify performance before turnover.
